How landed cost is calculated
Landed cost is what an imported product really costs by the time it reaches your door. It is the price you pay the supplier plus everything it takes to get the goods to you: freight, insurance, import duty and any other charges such as handling or brokerage.
Landed cost = goods value + freight + insurance + import duty + other charges.
Import VAT is calculated and shown separately. VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim it, so it is left out of the landed cost total. If you cannot reclaim import VAT, add it to your cost.
Worked example
500 units at £4.00 each, shipped to the United Kingdom with 12% duty and 20% VAT. These numbers illustrate the method. They are not a tariff quote.
| Goods (500 × £4.00) | £2,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Freight | £300.00 |
| Insurance | £20.00 |
| Customs value (goods + freight + insurance) | £2,320.00 |
| Import duty at 12% | £278.40 |
| Landed cost | £2,598.40 |
| Landed cost per unit | £5.20 |
| Import VAT at 20% (shown separately, usually reclaimable) | £519.68 |
| Selling price at a 10% margin | £2,858.24 |
Duty is charged on a customs value that depends on the country
Import duty is the duty rate multiplied by the customs value of the goods. Countries define that value in one of two ways.
- Most countries, including the UK and EU member states, charge duty on the CIF value: the goods plus freight and insurance.
- Some countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines and Taiwan, charge duty on the goods value only (FOB).
- The calculator picks the right basis from the destination you select.

Estimates only
Duty and VAT figures are estimates. The actual rate depends on the full 6 to 10 digit commodity code, the country of origin, any trade agreement and the rules of origin. Check with a licensed customs broker before you import.
Frequently asked questions
What is a landed cost calculator?
A landed cost calculator adds up everything it costs to bring imported goods to your door: the product price, freight, insurance, import duty and other charges. It shows your true cost per unit, so the price you quote covers the margin you want.
How do I calculate landed cost?
Add the goods value, freight, insurance, import duty and any other charges. Duty is the duty rate multiplied by the customs value, which is goods plus freight and insurance in most countries. Divide the total by the number of units to get the landed cost per unit.
Is this landed cost calculator really free?
Yes. You can calculate up to three items without an account or card details. A free OCTA Cost account adds saved quotations, customer and supplier records and PDF quotations, and starts with a 14-day trial of every feature.
Does landed cost include VAT?
In this calculator, import VAT is shown separately and is not part of the landed cost total, because VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim it. If you cannot reclaim import VAT, add it to your cost.
How is import duty calculated?
Import duty equals the duty rate multiplied by the customs value. The rate depends on the HS code of the product, the country it comes from, the country it goes to and any trade agreement. The customs value is the CIF value in most countries and the FOB value in countries such as the United States, Canada and Australia.
Which currencies does it support?
The free calculator supports USD, EUR, GBP, CNY, JPY, INR, AED and SAR, using live exchange rates.
How accurate are the duty and VAT figures?
They are estimates. The exact rate depends on the full commodity code, the origin of the goods and any trade agreement. Check with a licensed customs broker before you import.
