HS Code and Commodity Code Lookup

Describe your product in plain words to find matching UK commodity codes, then pick one to see its live import duty and VAT rate for the country your goods come from.

The interactive search needs JavaScript. It searches the live UK Trade Tariff by product description and shows the duty and VAT rate for the code you choose.

How HS codes and commodity codes work

The Harmonized System (HS) is the international product classification used by customs authorities worldwide. Its first six digits are the same in almost every country.

The UK adds more digits for its own tariff: an 8-digit commodity code for exports and a 10-digit commodity code for imports. The 10-digit code decides the duty rate, the VAT rate and whether any licences or extra duties apply.

Chapter (2 digits)61 – knitted clothing
Heading (4 digits)6109 – T-shirts, singlets and vests
Subheading (6 digits, HS)6109 10 – of cotton
UK commodity code (10 digits)6109 10 00 10 – example import code

How to find the right code

  • Start with what the product is and what it is made of, for example "cotton t-shirt" or "stainless steel kitchen knife".
  • Read the full description of each result, including the lines above it. Codes are often split by material, use, size or whether the item is knitted, assembled or for retail sale.
  • Check the General Rules of Interpretation and the chapter notes when two codes seem to fit. The most specific description normally wins.
  • For sets, parts and accessories, classification rules are different. Parts often have their own codes.
  • If you are still unsure, ask HMRC for an Advance Tariff Ruling, which gives a legally binding classification.

Why the right code matters

The wrong code can mean paying too much duty, or too little and facing a bill, penalties and delays later. HMRC holds the importer responsible for the classification, even when a broker makes the declaration.

All figures are estimates, not customs advice. Check the commodity code, origin rules and any reliefs before you rely on a number.

Frequently asked questions

Is an HS code the same as a commodity code?

An HS code is the first six digits, shared internationally. A UK commodity code adds digits: 8 for exports and 10 for imports.

How many digits does a UK import code have?

Ten. The first six are the HS code, the next two are the UK's 8-digit code, and the last two give the full 10-digit import code.

Where do these results come from?

From the UK Trade Tariff on GOV.UK, searched live when you type. Duty and VAT rates are fetched for the code and origin country you choose.

Can I use the same code in other countries?

The first six digits usually work worldwide, but each country adds its own digits and sets its own rates. Check the destination country's tariff.

What if no code fits my product?

Try a simpler description, search by material or function, or look at the 'Other' codes under the closest heading. For certainty, apply to HMRC for an Advance Tariff Ruling.
